My main aim for this project was to create a stage of images
that depict my chosen character through the story of the book.I chose a single man, as I love the descriptive way
Isherwood writes without giving his opinions on the character just forming them
for your own judgment.I wanted to create charley as my character as I found her
charismatic and her life a very intriguing and relevant to create in a shoot. I
also love the era of the sixties and the revelations of make up between the
early sixties with the youth coming to the forefront of fashion and trends. I
researched into the 1960s fashion trends and how woman wanted to portray their
selves in this era. it was a big turning point for woman being liberated and I
found the older generation of the 1960s had a big change too seeing their
children creating fashion history. For my first final image was of charley as her younger self,
I wanted to depict the character as an angelic, confident charismatic young
girl. Set in England in the fifties meant the make up for this image was of
this era with the red lips and arched brow however I still wanted to keep the
face looking fresh and young with colour in the cheek and not such a heavy
eye. For the hair I wanted a younger
feel with movement and create a down style with flicks to give it a youthful
appearance. For the styling the red two piece trouser gave the images colour
and vibrancy, I feel my final images translates the right concept of charley
being a beautiful lively girl with her life ahead of her, to improve I think
the lighting and set up of the shots could have been improved to make a more
natural scene. I also feel the hair could have been bigger and more of a
statement to the image.
My second shoot was to depict charley as a much older and
lonely woman, her life has changed dramatically and I wanted to strip her of
her materialistic life and show the aging dependant woman she tries to hide.
For the make up I darkened around the eyes and contoured the face to give a
drawn completion. I feel I could of improved on this image by aging the skin
more to show more of a contrast. My final image was to show the current charley and how she wants
to be shown, waiting for her friend in her home dressed up for dinner. For The
make up for this image I wanted to capture the sixties big eyes and pale lips,
for the styling i wanted to try two looks, a stylish younger cheerful look and
then a more sophisticated one to show an elegant charley, the setting was a
house I borrowed in Peckham which was perfect for light and furnishings. I
wanted the hair to have contrast from the first image with the hair pinned up
to suit her now drawn back character. I feel I could have made the eyes even
more dramatic for this shot to create a intense look. Overall I feel my images really represent the character and
how she has developed through the story, I wanted to capture the vivid and
alluring personality to charley and to make a connection with the viewer and
the image through emotion and intensity.
I believe I have organised all aspects of the shoots well to
create a creative team that complimented each other to create the narrative I wanted
to portray.
